D2 BASE DRESSED UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS [OCT 21, DEC 21]

2021: Dr. Inferno IV joins the existing lineup for trick-or-treaters & for a Trunk-or-Treat event at the local school

DISPLAY & TESTING AT BATTLEBOTS SEASON 6 EVENT [AUG 21]

Dr. Inferno IV kept me company while judging the BattleBots 2021 event...and he also guarded my stuff on breaks

Dr. Inferno IV got down with Kraftwerk between matches. (No, it would be too cliché to have that song playing in this photo...). Calibrated banana for scale

My 3 kids' smiling faces!

Dr. Inferno IV's Achilles Heel: Twizzlers, not only delicious, but also spinner-jamming

D2 BASE DRESSED UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS [OCT 20, DEC 20]

Halloween 2020: candy delivery bots

Halloween 2020: For social distancing, we taped off the driveway & set up plastic pumpkins as a barrier, then we drove the candy out when somebody approached

Halloween 2020: hiding in the dark garage, waiting for the next trick-or-treater to come by the driveway

ASSEMBLY COMPLETED [JUL 21]

Finished assembly! The 4 custom machined parts (torso, head, saws, saw coupler) came in to spec, & the design came together smoothly!

Somehow, I didn't have any red pinball flasher bulbs, but orange is close enough. I'll get some reds on my next pinball parts order. Spinner brushless ESC blinks bright blue through the chest--bot heartbeat!

The saws resememble Dr. Inferno Jr.'s, but I put teeth on both sides, to allow for swapping saws or perhaps for a future reversible weapon

Dark, low shots make him look bigger & scarier

Front wedge has a few scrapes from messing around with some other bots

CAD DESIGN [JUL 20]

An important part of mechanical design is organization. Make an accurate assembly, assign numbers & revisions to custom parts, enter detailed metadata, & then your CAD software will generate a Bill of Materials, which is invaluable for costing, purchasing, inventory, etc. etc.

To make sure the torso fit & was placed correctly, I first made a simple D2 model based on my own measurements & manufacturer data--all that's needed is the envelope & the interfaces

Top is 100% independent & removed in less than a minute via a handful of screws--no mucking about with wires or anything

I considered having the torso & head 3D printed, but the CNC machining cost was almost the same, & machining allowed me to design in some high-precision features

Dr. Inferno IV's storage case requires removing his torso from his base, a quick job due to the independent design; also, the torso & base each use the same type of battery, so I have a spare

If I were actually going to enter Dr. Inferno IV into combat, & if you were a robot, & if this is the view you saw, you might be worried

The bot-o-lantern gang, ready for Botoween

Eerie flickering glow courtesy of LED tea lights powered by coin batteries--just dump a few into each bucket--easy!

Bot-o-lanterns in the light are 28% less scary

I brought the bots to a local event run by Professor Martin Martin (team captain of BattleBot Mad Catter) to let kids drive them

We played with them in Andy Hedge's slick portable antweight arena

Set up for Halloween, ready to startle trick-or-treaters when they walked up to our house--blinky skeleton provides a good distraction!

Bot-o-lanterns dispersed between plain old buckets--extremely sneaky

I hid in the minivan, behind tinted windows, & drove the bots when kids came near. Boo! (Bot?) Bot Boo!
